| Abstract: | This dissertation is a study of identity in a YMCA shelter for the homeless in Valletta. It is based on fieldwork conducted from the summer of 2013 till the beginning of spring 2014. In subsequent chapters, I will be contextualising the shelter within the literature on poverty and homelessness in Malta and elsewhere, as well as focusing on certain aspects of homeless identity. Before that, however, it is necessary to give a descriptive account of the shelter and how I came to be drawn to the topic of identity by certain incidents during fieldwork. |
