Abstract: Dance is a dynamic and interdisciplinary art that is influenced by developments in society which include evolving attitudes and perceptions in relation to gender. Against this scenario, this study seeks to elicit a better understanding of the correlation between gender and dance. More specifically, it offers an in-depth analysis on how the shift in representation of gender has redefined the female body in dance. Modern dance pioneers like Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis have had a remarkable influence upon the representation of the female body and its empowerment on stage; however this study focuses on only one genre of dance, ballet. In providing a broader understanding of the shifts in the representation of gender and by analysing how these shifts have been transmitted onto the stage, this dissertation complements other studies that focus upon the interrelationship between gender and dance. Whilst contributing towards enhancing knowledge on the subject matter, I hope that this study will also serve to promote more awareness on the relationship between gender and dance among dance artists in Malta. Such awareness would further enrich the knowledge that local dance artists already possess.
