This paper considers the way Robinson Crusoe has been received as a novel about origins and how this is tied to particular literary, historical, economic and philosophical investments that posit a discrete, autonomous subject. It then looks at how Foe, Coetzee’s reworking of Robinson Crusoe, presents a deconstruction of that subjectivity, crafting, in doing so, a complementary literary form far removed from realism.en_GB
