Abstract: Access to medicines is a fundamental element of the right to health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), unimpeded access to essential medicines can save lives, reduce suffering, and improve the population's overall health. The study’s aim is to assess the impact of the derogations published by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on the access to medicines in Malta, by exploring its impact on the practice of CPSU representatives, pharmacists, and physicians. A focus group with CPSU representatives and individual interviews with physicians and pharmacists was done. Participants from both procedures were chosen through convenience sampling. The main themes derived from the focus group discussion with CPSU representatives are as follows: 1. Importance of the UK as a supplier of medicines, 2. measures taken to prepare for Brexit, 3. challenges encountered during the transition period, and 4. opportunities for improvement. Similar themes were discovered from the interviews with physicians and pharmacists: 1. Challenges encountered during the transition period, 2. Measures taken to bridge the gap in medicines access, 3. Concerns encountered due to shortages of medicines, and 4. Opportunities for improvement. The data collection processes, revealed that the healthcare stakeholders face several challenges concerning the supply of medicines, despite the regulatory exemptions provided by the health authorities. However, it is important to note that the authorities at a national and EU level are continuously working to provide solutions for these concerns, with the primary goal being to provide the best possible health care to patients.
