Abstract: As are evident from the examples given here, the rivalries and conflicts in Maltese football are era-specific, with particular polarities emerging at particular times. In some cases, the rivalries serve to unite the population of a village or town - mitigating the conflicts that can be caused by politics, festa or the band clubs. In other cases, they fail to do so, adding fuel to already stoked fires. In all cases, however, the idioms of antagonism are drawn from a repertoire of symbols associated with patron saints, local history, social status and political allegiance. In all cases, such idioms are chosen with care to inflict maximum symbolic damage and in the spirit of the gloating tradition of tmieghek. In all cases it is as important to have one's rivals lose as to win oneself.
