Abstract: As manufacturing enters a new paradigm of cyber production, new methods are required to support the production system design activity. These methods have to take into consideration both the cyber and physical aspects of the system design, whilst also satisfying requirements of modularity, connectivity and intelligence. This paper presents a modular system design approach for cyber-physical production systems, which is based on the established systematic method of modular function deployment. The result of applying this design approach is a modular system architecture which describes the system modules for both cyber and physical aspects of the production system.
