Design and implementation of the ICARUS Industry 4.0 mobile training unit

Abstract

The development and implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies in industry have brought about the need to also update the skills of current and future engineers. Furthermore, training paradigms are shifting. The upcoming generation of learners has a greater and easier access to knowledge, yet finds difficulties in applying that knowledge in a comprehensive manner. The dynamic of the future classroom has to therefore shift in order to make use of digital learning technologies, whilst at the same time provide the opportunity for learners to apply their knowledge. Online and digital learning methods, such as open educational resources will take on a greater role in the future. That said, the COVID-19 pandemic has also shown us the importance of maintaining in-person teaching. This research work therefore contributes a mobile training unit, which allows for the real-time application of various Industry 4.0 technologies and concepts for use within the classroom. This paper also outlines the methodology by which this Industry 4.0 mobile training unit has been developed.
