Abstract: Lorenzo Gafà ( 1639-1703) is considered to be one of the major protagonists of Maltese Baroque architecture. Gafà was certainly the most prolific architect on the island during the late-seventeenth century and he was almost single-handedly responsible for the diffusion of the Baroque style beyond Valletta, the city of the Order. The architectural contributions of Gafà outshine those of his local contemporaries including Francesco Sammut (?-1667), Giovanni Barbara (1642-1728), and Vincenzo Casanova (1645?-1706) whose works were far more limited both in terms of quantity and quality.
