Abstract: The Industry 4.0 paradigm has brought about a new range of methods and technologies which can support industry in dealing with highly competitive market scenarios and rapidly changing customer demands. This paper elaborates on the concept of concurrency the development of smart products and smart factories and contributes a digital manufacturing model. The aim of this model is to support industry to bridge the gap with advanced digital technologies, by illustrating how these can be employed during the different phases of the factory life cycle. A number of use case are also presented which explore how digital technologies can be implemented within a concurrent engineering environment.
