Emanuele Buhagiar (1876-1962) : a designer and sculptor in early twentieth century Malta

Abstract

The substantial amount of artistic production that went on in Malta at the turn of the 20th century has been the subject of extensive writings. Painting, sculpture and architecture, both ecclesiastical and not, have all received their considerable share of attention and study. Another equally important aspect of artistic production in Malta was that of the decorative arts, particularly in its ecclesiastical dimension. Until very recently, however, this field has remained largely neglected and has seldom received the academic attention it deserves. Now, gradually, a more focused picture is emerging, even though our knowledge of the situation is still considerably limited. [Excerpt]
