Abstract: Although the Island had been on a war footing since 1939, it was always felt, certainly by the Maltese, that Italy would not come into the war, and the first bombing which took place at 7 a.m. On June 10 was a complete surprise to them - they certainly never realized that war would be like this. Civilian casualties on that morning. were 23 killed and 110 wounded but only 7 military casualties. The bombing caused a sort of 'primary shock' and there was a wholesale exodus from the dockyard area. Malta was generally ill-prepared for war, including its siege defences and medical service.
