| Abstract: | This special issue of Surface Engineering about the S-phase brings together a range of publications on the S-phase that have been presented in the 21st and 22nd International Conference on ‘Surface modification technologies’ organised by Dr T. S. Sudarshan, Professor Micheal Jeandin (SMT 21) and Professor Per Nylen (SMT 22). These papers, together with a number of contributions by invited authors who have published a great deal of scientific knowledge and understanding of the S-phase, but could not attend these conferences, have also been included.
