Abstract: The article discusses a transitional approach to the use of oral history in tracing a Maltese national identity. From using oral history as a mere addition to traditional research methods to the point when it operates as the main catalyst for the research. The main switch occurred with popularizing of Maltese Folklore through the local media and the expansion of anthropology and ethnography. This impacted a new generation of historians and even linguists focusing on the evolution and the structure of the Maltese language. As a result of that, more democratic historians have been appearing also equipped with technical skills to make interviews with laboring people to disbosom authentic examples of Maltese common national culture.
