Abstract: The most important artistic trends as they developed in the tiny island of Gozo from the early seventeenth century to the present day are reflected in the art treasures of the parish church of St George, situated in the very heart of the island, on a site steeped in the island’s ancient history. In many ways, the works of painting, sculpture and decorative arts reflect the larger context of artistic developments on the sister island of Malta – a microcosm of Maltese Art History. A focus on the works of art in this important church enables the viewer to relish a good cross-section of considerably important works of art produced by some of the finest artists active in Malta in the last four centuries. Indeed, the art treasures of St George’s Basilica offer a constant and consistent journey through the most salient aspects of art-making in Malta. [Excerpt]
