Abstract: | The subject of Systems of Knowledge was introduced in postsecondary institutions in 1987. Since then, a number of changes have taken place, including changes to the syllabus, the way the subject is taught and how the students are assessed. The subject has the privilege that no other subject at the postsecondary level enjoys, in that all students are obliged to study it. Since its introduction, thousands of students have studied the subject which has contributed towards their growth as responsible citizens. This privilege carries with it a great responsibility for syllabus setters and educators who have to ensure that the subject remains updated and meaningful. As a subject, Systems of Knowledge can be considered as unique because while it draws from various fields of the academic world, it approaches them in an interdisciplinary manner. Furthermore, Systems of Knowledge may also be considered as a distinct subject with no identical counterpart being taught abroad. This makes it particularly difficult to find a single, ready-made reference book on the market, suitable for the age group it is aimed for. As a result of this reality, a number of colleagues teaching the subject in different institutions took the initiative to publish such a book in the best interest of students. In my opinion, this is truly commendable and should be emulated by others teaching in other areas. This publication should guarantee that students have a comprehensive collection of readings that cover the four main modules of the syllabus in detail and depth as required at this level of learning. It is envisaged that these readings complement the learning experience in the lecture room for a more meaningful and lasting experience of the subject. [Foreword by Paul Xuereb] |
