Abstract: The great prevalence of Mediterranean fever and the prolonged illness caused by it bad constantly brought the disease under the consideration of those responsible for the well-being of the men in the Services, both at home and abroad. Not only were the hospitals at Malta and Gibraltar occupied by large numbers of men who had contracted the disease on the station, but the annual number of days' sickness and loss by invaliding to the Naval Service was enormous. Another very serious fact was the very large percentage of young and active officers attacked, who were often rendered incapable to perform their duty for many months.
