Abstract: | The project manager’s role is evolving into one of the most important specialist roles in the construction trade. This is due to the ever-growing complexity of buildings, as well as the increasing expectations of stakeholders. Despite industry advancements, particularly on a global scale, the local profession appears to be trailing substantially behind. Studies show this is due to a lack of education and a national regulatory structure set in place for good governance. This study used a mixed method approach to collect data from local practitioners to understand the correlation between tools and techniques and their implication on project success. Results show that the effect of the project managers' academic credentials, as well as early management participation in projects, determine the extent of project success. The research indicated a positive correlation between collective project management tools and techniques and the performance parameters of time, quality, cost, stakeholders’ satisfaction and establishing business success. There are statistically significant differences between the impact these have on the above parameters. The data revealed however no statistically significant findings between specific tools and techniques that indicate major variations in their contribution to meet a particular success parameter. However, a clear relation emerged between the project manager's early involvement and the project performance. In conclusion, the study presents a series of recommendations on the basis of the data gathered, to assist the modernisation and enhancement of the local industry standards. These include: • The establishment of mandatory management courses by institutions or authorities to enhance the management profession towards progress within the industry. • The formation of a register which encompasses the qualifications, abilities, and experience of professionals in the field. • Setting up a minimum level of management certification requirement, that will certify, that project managers can conduct the profession on large scale projects. • The formation of legislation which ensures the mandatory involvement of management professionals from inception for large scale projects. |
