Abstract: Mention Malta to a doctor and .his response will depend on his interests: the historically minded will point to the island's gallantry in two world wars, and further back in the time of Napoleon and Nelson; the clinician will cite brucellosis, and even the two abnormal haemoglobins discovered on the island; and the politician will instance what is now becoming known as the Great Dispute, the period between 1977 and 1987 when many doctors were prevented by the government from practising their profession and had to seek work abroad, being replaced by recruits from the Eastern bloc, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent. Over much of this period the BMA's Malta branch has had an important role. Last week the branch held three days of centenary celebrations.
