This portfolio comprises four contrasting original compositions where each one has its own distinct individuality and style. Most of the compositions have a contemporary feel although maintain the all important melodic flow. Rhythm is a very important aspect to me, and I have strived to include a sense of rhythm in all of the works presented in this portfolio. Although these works are modern, they are mildly contemporary, with a tonal or modal backbone and with minimal dissonances. Padparadscha is the first work in this compilation. This is a two-part advanced work for solo cello, offering a playful and rhythmical playfield enhancing the instrument’s technical ability and exploiting its range to the full. Ecce Panis Angelorum is a modal choral piece with a string accompaniment, set to the text Ecce Panis Angelorum. Although it is basically modal in stlye, I have veered away slightly from the strict modal scale to add my own interpretation and create a more contemporary feel to it. The third piece Chroma is a very unusual combination of instruments which in my opinion work well together. Chroma meaning colour, is a quartet for Clarinet, Viola, Xylophone and Tubular bells or chimes. It is mostly based on quartal harmony, giving it a modal texture. The clarinet provides most of the melody lines and ornaments with the viola filling in the harmony and providing a complimenting accompaniment, whilst the pitched percussion provide the harmony and give this piece a rhythmical bounce. My most intricate work of all is the last work called Loss and Grief. It is written for a standard orchestra, Mezzo soprano and SATB choir. It is in five movements, each representing the standard stages of grief one goes through after the loss of a loved one or himself/herself being diagnosed with a terminal illness. Each movement has its own distinct features which describe that stage, transcribing emotions and feelings which are all part of the grieving process. All in all I think that my portfolio is a varied one, full of individual styles and techniques which would interest a wide audience both traditional and contemporary, who appreciate good music.en_GB
