Abstract: This paper deals with the study of the corrosion layers formed on 10 objects of armour from the Palace Armoury collection, Valletta, Malta. A metal fragment was extracted from each artifact and prepared into a cross-section. The corrosion occurring on the metal is described after investigation with optical and scanning electron microscopy. The aim of this work was to study the morphology of the corrosion layers. The information gained will be used to devise a protocol for cleaning these artifacts and identify the so-called ‘original surface’.
