Abstract: | Technology is a progressive tool but in some aspects it can also be considered as regressive especially when it is used to commit crimes. It is essential to emphasise that the internet did not create new crimes as internet crimes are more or less similar to physical crimes. However, it created a vast amount of unrestricted venues where internet offenders can operate. Anonymity, easy access, and the borderless nature of the internet make any user vulnerable to become a cyber-victim. This study highlighted the fact that children and young persons tend to spend most of their time online so they are also at risk to become victims. Therefore, this study aimed to understand the responses that are undertaken in Malta in relation to online child abuse committed by adult offenders. In order to analyse this aspect a qualitative approach was adapted and six indepth interviews were carried out with six different professionals. These professionals provided legal, enforcement, supportive, procedural, and preventative expertise in relation to online child abuse. Several recommendations were gathered which include the importance of global harmonisation of legislations and procedures, maintaining local legislations updated, continuous investment in tools and human resources for law enforcement, continuous awareness campaigns, training for involved stakeholders to adequately handle such cases, and emphasising proactive investigations and more internet patrolling by law enforcement. |
