Maltese emigration from 1920 to 1964

Abstract

My Dissertation will be focusing on Maltese emigration from 1920 up until 1964. Emigration among the Maltese population was very common during this mentioned period. That is because the Maltese nation was not content with what the island was offering. There was a lack of unemployment while the population was growing larger by year. I have chosen to focus on six areas which I divided into four chapters. The first area that I have chosen consists of the push-and-pull factors that led to emigration. This chapter gives a thorough explanation as to why Maltese people resorted to emigration in the twentieth century. The second chapter focuses on Maltese emigration to Australia, as well as on the topic of child migrants who were being migrated to Australia. The third chapter is about Maltese emigration to the United States of America and Canada. These three countries that I chose to focus on were the most popular destinations to emigrate to among the Maltese nation. In fact, there were various schemes established, especially with Australia, to make emigration more accessible. On the other hand, the receiving countries also established restrictions to limit the number of migrants. My final chapter focuses on female migrants and Maltese communities. Female migrants were much smaller in number compared to male migrants. However, they are still worth mentioning. Furthermore, Maltese communities also played an important role in this subject as various Maltese communities were being established overseas. The main aim of this study was to find out why Maltese people have so many ancestors overseas and what the reasons were that made them leave the island. That is why I chose to dive into the history of Maltese emigration. Needless to say, there is much more to talk about than I have written regarding this topic. However, as I was limited by the word count, I chose these six areas that I thought were the most important to mention.
