Abstract: This paper traces the history and development of three family houses of a seventeenth-century Maltese woman, Cosmana Navarra, in Rabat and Mdina. It takes into account the strategies used by families in early modern Malta to transfer their assets through inheritance, such as through establishing an entail (fedecommesso), limiting inheritance to a specified succession of heirs, or through founding ecclesiastical benefices (giuspatronato), appointing family members as their patrons. Families also aimed to retain and protect the prestige of symbolic assets such as the family name and coat of arms.
