Abstract: The drowning of thousands of people in the Mediterranean Sea, with 2016 being the deadliest year on record, when European governments were more focused on border security than on migrant safety, also fleetingly put Malta at the centre of this strand of migration history. This chapter seeks to provide an overview of some of the most salient aspects of Malta’s migration management model, including some of the socio-cultural and politico-legal factors that have resulted in the existing legal frameworks.
