Abstract: | I had never considered writing a theoretical dissertation instead of making a short film. Though the subject of cinema is something that I love to read and research about, I feel more passionate about the practical task of film-making. Unfortunately, I soon understood that I had not only to face financial constraints but also Covid-19. Planning during a pandemic was quite hard and required several delays especially since I did not want to endanger any of my cast and crew. Nevertheless, the passion I possess for shooting movies withstood all these restrictions and gave birth to my short, Marċi Funebri. Before embarking on this journey, I had doubted my abilities to write horror. In fact, I had submitted a totally different script with a different genre and subject. Unlike Marċi Funebri, who has horrific elements, the original script dealt with themes that relied on slapstick comedy. Even though I admire this kind of genre, in this thesis, I wanted to create something different from what I was used to. Therefore, after much deliberation and self-thought, I set my mind in writing this short, a terrifying story with also elements of dark humour. The first chapters of the thesis are a reflection on how the short came about. Hence, it is important to mention my childhood experiences listening to family members telling me scary stories. These experiences contributed to the crafting of my short. In fact, the latter represents my childhood experiences, horror elements but also folkloristic themes. As a consequence, this leads to a brief discussion of my film's subgenre, folk horror. It is then followed by a quick examination of what frightens me and what compelled me to write the screenplay as it is. For this reason, I take into account different films, episodes and theories, such as the Uncanny Valley. I conclude my write-up portraying my experience whilst making this short. Starting with the writing process and working my way through pre-production, filming, and post-production. Throughout this chapter, I also explain how I managed to overcome financial challenges as well as my crew’s lack of expertise. |
