Abstract: This essay will examine Hisham Matar’s The Return: Fathers, Sons and the Land in Between, arguing that Matar’s memoir offers up its resources as a space of asylum and political shelter while simultaneously affording the memoirist a dimension of surrogate agency by which to perpetuate his disappeared father’s political voice. In his memoir, published in late 2016, Matar gives an account of his return to and a renewed relation with the land of his upbringing after the 2011 uprising that resulted in the ousting of Muammar Qaddafi.
