Abstract: This article tackles the liturgical year from an unusual perspective, namely its theological dimension. The liturgical year is more often than not studied from the point of view of liturgical studies. At the foundation of the theology of the liturgical year there lies the mystery of Christ, in particular, the paschal mystery. Reference is made both to early authors, such as Augustine and Gregory the Great, as well as 20th century scholars like Jean-Jacques von Allmen, Irenee Henri Dalmais and Luigi della Torre. Reference is also made to Pope Benedict XVI's Apostolic Exhortation "Verbum Domini" and its emphasis on the proclamation of God's word during the liturgical celebration. The liturgical year is a marvellous experience where time meets eternity. The theological relevance of the liturgical year is studied from the point of view of its catechetical value, its pastoral dimension, its biblical characteristics and its spiritual effects.
