dc.description | This study is to be read in conjunction with two previous articles published by the same author in 1988-90, "Augustine the Manichaean and the Problem of Evil" in Augustinian Panorama, Vol.5-7, and "The Problem of Evil and the Unbaptised Augustine: His Childhood and the Manichaean Connection", in Studia Ephemeridis Augustinianum 85, published in 2003. | en_GB |
dc.description.abstract | This article forms the final part of a trilogy in which the present author traces the problem of evil in Augustine's childhood and adolescence, and his Manichaean period, right on to his conversion to Neo-Platonic Christianity. This latest study journeys with Augustine in his encounter with the Academicians and with Plotinian philosophy. The impact of the latter on Augustine is investigated. The article shows how Augustine's engagement with Neo-Platonic philosophy was instrumental in leading him to embrace Christianity. Focus is made on the aesthetic view which Augustine discovers in Plotinus, evil as privation of the good, and the free will and evil. | en_GB |
