Citation: Muscat, R. (2022). The role of social media within the fine arts industry: a systematic literature review (Master's dissertation).
Abstract: Context: Social media is developing at a fast rate, yet its adaptation within the fine arts industry has not been as gradual. This systematic literature review aims to identify the role that social media plays within the fine arts industry, and how it is being utilised by key players within the industry. Objective: The main objective of this systematic literature review is to provide a broader understanding of the role of social media (SM) in the fine arts industry. The purpose is twofold. This research starts by exploring academic papers on social media practices within the fine arts industry published in peer-reviewed journals. Based on the literature found, it seeks to identify any gaps observed on topics focusing on the role of social media within the fine arts industry, while suggesting future research. Method: The author collected and reviewed studies using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, adhering to an established review procedure (PRISMA). This approach collected all relevant research papers published in the last twenty years by integrating predefined search terms in online databases. Results: This study identified a total of 34 primary studies that present research findings on the use of SM in the fine arts industry. These studies were reviewed using a systematic approach that extrapolated current discourse to answer the research questions posed by the author. The author analysed and categorised peer-reviewed papers that addressed the role of social media and its use in the fine arts industry, including its advantages and disadvantages. Most identified studies focused on social media, highlighting the need for future research on the use of social media in the fine arts. Conclusions: The SLR found that, whereas SM is growing at an exponential rate, the fine arts industry is gradually adapting to it. In analysing the current debate and studies, the need for future research became apparent. This study provides an in-depth discussion as well as recommendations for further research.
