Technological advancements have made it possible to have embedded systems integrated with home appliances representing a smart home, a fully connected environment that gives its members control through IoT devices. This has added a level of comfort however, the implementation of a smart home can be complex and can largely have an impact on one’s privacy. Yet according to some sources, around two-thirds of consumers in 2021 are more likely to invest in smart home systems [1]. This project proposes a solution of a voice-controlled smart home system implemented through two microcontroller boards targeted for IoT based applications Arduino Uno and NodeMCU ESP8266, which are interfaced with a mobile application, various sensors, electronic devices, and a real-time database. NodeMCU ESP8266 is a development board with WiFi connection capabilities and therefore, it can be used to send and receive signals through a wireless link. In this project, the various sensors are interfaced with the Arduino Uno board and their data is sent to the NodeMCU ESP8266 board via serial communication. The NodeMCU ESP8266 board can send this data to a real-time database and then to the mobile application which is directly interfaced with the database. Moreover, signals are sent through WiFi to the microcontroller from a proprietary application and vice-versa to achieve control. This project will present a simple and cost-effective solution to home automation.en_GB
