Abstract: Images today are commonplace, cheap and disposable. The gadgets we daily carry around with us, such as the mobile phone and the tablet, have various capabilities of photographing, editing and manipulating an image. Through them, we can also upload images onto what have become today’s foremost showplaces of pictures – social media sites on the World Wide Web. These activities have grown to such unbelievable numbers that Yahoo estimates that eight hundred and eighty billion photographs were taken in 2014 (Horaczek, 2012), with the social networking site Facebook alone seeing around two hundred and fifty million photos uploaded every day (Bullas, 2012), while Instagram photo uploads amount to more than five million daily (Lynley, 2012).
