The definition of death: In most cases, there is no difficulty in deciding whether someone is dead or not! But in cases where a patient is in a coma or a similar state, the question becomes tricky. The issue can be of enormous practical significance in relation to organ donation. If a person’s organs are available for donation, they need to be removed at an early stage; but legally they cannot be removed before a person is dead. Doctors in Malta rely on brain-stem death. It is explained that when the brain-stem has died, the person ceases to have any meaningful brain activity. [Excerpt]en_GB
