Abstract: This traditional protocol included a prudent, if somewhat arbitrarily determined, interval for the unloaded healing phase between the two surgical stages. In recent years, the fiscal and psychosocial implications of accelerated and presumably simpler osseointegration protocols catalyzed a demand for a modified clinical management timetable. The timing and sequence of the original protocol were reevaluated, alternative scenarios were proposed, and concepts of immediate and early-loading protocols were introduced and popularized.
