The electrical energy sector in the Maltese Islands is based upon two fossil-fuel generation plants located at Marsa in the inner reaches of the Grand Harbour and at Delimara in Marsaxlokk Bay. Both stations have a combined nominal installed capacity of 571 MW and are operated by Enemalta Corporation. Enemalta Corporation is also the designated electricity distribution system operator in Malta responsible for the operation, upkeep and development of the electricity grid network. Two major projects in this sector are the extension of the power station at Delimara and a grid interconnectorwith Sicily. The domestic sector accounts for the highest average electrical energy consumption, at 36 % of the total. The commercial and industrial sectors follow, accounting for 32 % and 30 % of consumption respectively. Street lighting accounts for the remainder.en_GB
