Abstract: The need of the spatial planning profession in Malta continues to remain very urgent, particularly at all levels of government and public agencies. Moreover, in this digital age, with tools like Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and assessment of big data, spatial planners need to strive to utilise their unique skill set and lateral thinking for the benefit of our country and the wellbeing of its inhabitants, even if many times we feel under appreciated. The ethos of spatial planners is making the world a better place for all living things, guided by knowledge and balance. It is a great responsibility. If used sensibly, honestly, inclusively, and collaboratively, spatial planning can be the inspiration and drive for a true change in culture increasingly obsessed by the accumulation of personal wealth. The spatial planners’ skillset includes the ability to understand the needs of a local community, the identification of underlying issues and possible conflicts, reconciliation and mediation and the capability of grappling with the realities of facets of human nature. Meaningful consultation, and engagement will inform positive spatial planning outcomes that benefit all stakeholders.
