St John’s Co-Cathedral, which was built by the Hospitaller Knights of St John as their main or conventual church, is an expression of the ethos and identity of that religious and chivalric order. It is also a veritable artistic gem, blending together a sober Mannerist-style fabric with a stunning and richly decorated Baroque interior, which never fails to impress the legion of visitors who daily visit this unique world heritage site. St John’s Co-Cathedral is not only a historical, cultural and artistic monument of international repute, but it is also a sacred space where the Catholic faith is nurtured, professed and celebrated. The Knights of the chivalric Order of St John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta tried their very best, and dedicated considerable effort and expense, to build and embellish their conventual church with artistic works of the finest level of execution. As a result, this great temple was gradually transformed into a veritable treasure house, thanks to the Grand Masters and dignitaries of the Order, together with a host of individual member Knights, who generously sponsored and donated highly artistic gifts, and proffered pecuniary endowments in support of this magnificent temple.en_GB
