Religious vocabulary of Maltese and Arab origin. Having defined how the Maltese language today in Malta and Gozo as a fundamentally Arabic dialect, the author addresses the problem of religious vocabulary. The author has grouped these Maltese-Arabic religious words into four (4) groups : (1) words that are common to Christian Arabic; (2) words which occur in Islam but are adapted to a Christian context (Christianised Muslim words); (3) local formations from Arabic roots; and (4) a few sporadic Byzantine (Greek) relics strictly speaking outside the scope this paper.en_GB
