Abstract: Historically, the neighbourhood watch schemes were introduced force wide in England by the Metropolitan Police in September, 1983, and they represented probably the largest crime prevention initiative with a single launch date anywhere in the world. The launch of the N.W. schemes, was designed to combat the disturbing increase in opportunist burglary at that time by encouraging residents to share with the police the responsibility for protecting their own and their neighbours' property. This article looks at what neighbourhood watch is, how it operates, what preventative measures it uses, and how it works in deterring crime.
