Abstract: Prof. Conrad Thake takes us on a tour of the Birgu waterfont and outlines the history of the many palatial buildings and warehouses found there. The historic Birgu waterfront stretches along the water's edge between the St Lawrence parish church all the way to Fort St Angelo, at the tip of the peninsula. Most of the waterfront as we experience it today evolved during the 16th and 17th century. During this period the Order of St John embarked upon the building of a number of palatial buildings and warehouses that would serve as the infrastructure for the flourishing mercantile trade and as a supporting base for the war gallevs of the Order.
