The commemoration of the 1565 events presents us with an opportunity to discuss whether archeology can contribute anything significant towards the study of this iconic historical event. We will focus in particular on the archaeological site of Għar l-Aħmar, a burial ground on the west coastline of Marsaxlokk Bay investigated by the Museums Department in a series of emergency excavations between 1959 and 2000. This paper considers whether the site was associated with the Ottoman invasion of 1565. However, this identification as yet stands unconfirmed and the site remains open to interpretation and further investigation.en_GB
