Abstract: Sailing into the Grand Harbour in the eighteenth century foreign visitors on the Grand Tour pictured instantly a place of heavily fortified-cities – Valletta, Birgu and Isla, surrounded by a countryside of villas, gardens and field estates. Investments from patrons, who commissioned foreign and local engineers, architects, and agrimensori (land surveyors) contributed to shape the early modern landscape. The planning, designs and management done by these technical experts survive today in the built and landscape heritage, as well as in archival records. This places the study of these figures central and significant for the re-construction of the Maltese landscape and society.
