Abstract: About 1450, three Dominican fathers — Pietro Zurki, Andrea di Morsea and Pietro di Platea, came to Malta from nearby Sicily, with the intention of establishing the first Dominican community on the island. For the location of their priory, the Dominicans selected a site close to an underground cave on the outskirts of Rabat. The grotto was a venerated site which was dedicated to the Madonna tal-Għar (Our Lady of the Grotto) after a tradition that a local hunter seeking refuge within the cave had experienced an apparition of Our Lady.
