Invisible wound : the effect of emotional maltreatment and neglect in childhood

Abstract

Emotional abuse and neglect are significant problems that affect millions of children around the world, and their effects on the development and well-being of children can be severe and long-lasting. Emotional abuse is the consistent failure of a carer to provide a child with adequate emotional support, compassion, and devotion. For instance, verbal aggression and communicating messages that imply humiliation and low values. Neglect occurs when a carer fails to meet a child's emotional requirements, such as affection, support, and attention. Emotional abuse and neglect can have detrimental consequences, including emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem, depression, and difficulty establishing healthy relationships as an adult. The PEO question states: What is the aftereffect of childhood emotional abuse and emotional neglect? The research issue focuses on a population of children and young adolescents; the exposure is emotional abuse and emotional neglect in childhood, and it leads to a number of effects, including problematic interpersonal and social relationships, suicidal ideation, and emotional dysregulation, all of which impact adult emotional well-being. In my article analysis, I include "childhood emotional abuse" and "emotional neglect," "the English language," "peer-reviewed academic publications," and "full-text articles." I exclude from my list "childhood sexual abuse," "childhood physical abuse," "childhood maltreatment in general," "abstract-only articles" and "publications and journals older than ten years." Each selected article employs appropriate methods of critical evaluation. The CASP method was utilised to evaluate and critique the various study designs, including systematic reviews, observational studies, and cohort studies. This initiative employs the critical appraisal instrument for cross-sectional studies (AXIS). The dissertation investigates the relationship between emotion regulation skills, psychiatric problems, and social difficulties in individuals who have experienced emotional abuse and neglect as children. Through a comprehensive analysis of the literature and empirical research, this dissertation will investigate the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the negative effects of emotional abuse and neglect in childhood, with a particular focus on emotion regulation abilities, depressive symptoms, and interpersonal relationships. Ultimately, the purpose of this research is to provide insights that can be used to design effective interventions to aid individuals who have experienced traumatic events.
