Abstract: The first formulation of the rule on the admissibility of confessions was given in Rex v. Warickshall (1783), 'A confession forced from the mind by flattery of hope, or by the torture of fear, comes in so questionable a shape when it is to he considered as the evidence of guilt, that no credit ought to be given to it, and therefore is rejected'.
