The study of social policy evolved in parallel with the growth of the welfare state and the development of citizens' social rights during the 20th century. Social policy aims to respond to the needs of individuals and families, and does so through the formulation, administration, delivery and analysis of policy in various domains. Social policy draws upon different disciplines, and is characterised by an applied and empirical focus and by values that include adequacy, equity, effectiveness, solidarity and sustainability. This book has three main parts. The first part includes a chapter that introduces key concepts in social policy, and two context-setting chapters on political and economic perspectives on Malta. The second part consists of eight chapters that present key concepts, trends and challenges in different domains of social policy, while the third part examines social policy from the perspectives of seven different groups. Each chapter provides questions for discussion and recommended readings. This first textbook on social policy in Malta offers an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the field. It is a valuable resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying Maltese social policy and related subjects, and for anyone interested in understanding the current shape and status of social policy in Malta in the context of its background and key challenges.en_GB
