Abstract: Inappropriate prescribing involves the prescribing of drugs where there is no straightforward indication and where the risks outweigh the benefits. (1) Risks from inappropriate use of medicines cause patient harm and adverse drug events. (2) Identifying and studying the risks which come about from medication errors and from prescribing inappropriately are an important first step to preventing errors from occurring.
