Abstract: | Permit us to introduce ourselves. We have known each other for over 25 years, we were both mathematics teachers before we became teacher educators, and Michael supervised James’s research at both undergraduate and masters levels. More pertinent here is that we both had Malcolm Swan as one of our PhD supervisors. Michael finished his PhD in 2005 and James is now approaching the end of his doctoral journey. Drawing on our personal experiences with Malcolm, we present here a ‘conversation’ between ourselves that originated as a Facebook Messenger chat. Our aim is to foreground and celebrate the exquisite humanity and academic prowess of Malcolm Swan, who we consider as one of the greatest contemporary contributors to the advancement of mathematics education and the professional development of teachers. |
