Abstract: This paper considers the design and analysis of a 22-kW surface-mounted permanent magnet electrical machine for a flywheel electrical storage system to be used to power engineless aircraft taxiing. Such an application requires a high specific power during operation. In this paper, the machine is designed having the slot-pole combination selected with respect to the speed, voltage, and torque requirement. The paper describes the coupling of the electromagnetic design and thermal design processes. This is used to optimize the machine geometry while ensuring that the machine power requirements are achieved within the set temperature limits.
