Abstract: The Universite Saint-Joseph of Beirut (USJ) was founded as a private Catholic University by the Society of Jesus (a.k.a. Jesuits) 140 years ago, in 1875. Supported by funds from Catholic contributors in England and the Americas, it initially followed the model of the Gregorian University in Rome by specialising in philosophy and theology, with the courses being grouped together under the Faculty of Theological Studies when the French School of Medicine was created at the USJ in 1883. Strong connections were established with France, particularly through the links of the Syrian Jesuits to Lyon, and despite the fact that the French government at the time was going through a period of anti-clericalism, it nevertheless decided to support the new University, both through regular injections of financial aid, as well as by recognising the qualifications of USJ as equivalent to those in France.
