Abstract: The objective of the current research is to investigate the psychological impacts experienced by eight elite Maltese athletes while participating in the Olympics. To achieve this objective, the study utilized a qualitative methodology and applied thematic analysis as its theoretical framework. The collection of data was carried out through semi-structured interviews, and five global themes emerged from the data analysis, including the psychological effects in preparation to the Olympics; use of psychological techniques to overcome these effects, the public and association’s expectations; the athlete’s strengths to overcome these challenges; and Maltese elite athletes’ perspectives when participating in the Olympics. The study's findings suggest that athletes face a range of psychological effects while preparing and competing in the Olympics, and that several psychological techniques can be beneficial for managing these challenges. Additionally, the research highlights the importance of possessing certain strengths to withstand the mental demands of becoming an Olympian. Participating in the Olympics requires rigorous physical and mental training, as well as substantial commitment, sacrifice, and hardship. The study aims to inspire aspiring elite athletes, and it suggests that individuals who wish to compete in the Olympics must be dedicated, hard-working, and last but not least, enjoy the sport.
